Gifts of the Morons

Something I’ve noticed: ever since this incident the trains seem to be sounding their horns even louder and longer when going through stops. It’s easy to notice this, because the tracks run right next to my apartment complex. It’s a good thing I like the sound of trains.

Train sounds remind me of my childhood. We didn’t live near the tracks but back then the town was quieter and you could hear most nights the occasional bark of dogs off in the distance along with the distant train whistle and rattle of the railcars on the tracks. It must’ve been quieter in my childhood because we were miles from the rai lines. I don’t think even if I spent the night in the old house that I’d hear the train whistles, boxcars, dogs bark anymore: the traffic’s too intense now; every night all night. It would make me sad anyway; I’m too sentimental.

The railway runs through our place which was neat as a kid. Always lots of debris to play with i.e. spikes but always taught to be careful about trains i.e. stop and look and always stop carwhen the crossing lights come on. Where I grew up, there were three suicides by train in a couple of months. Trains still blow their whistles pretty strongly when they go through.
