I’m listening to some of my old vinyl LPs on the ancient Kenwood turntable to see if it’s worth at least keeping some of them. I forgot how freaking annoying the phenomenon of skipping is. And that, children, is why God gave man the ability to improve his technology. God loves us and does not want us to be annoyed! The records are going in the dumpster, as is the record player, which is on its last legs anyway.

Oh yeah — and that “warmer sound” nonsense vinyl-philes are always jabbering about? It’s a euphemism for “muffled, muddy sound.” Digital rules.

The muddy sound is probably mostly turntable rumble. I obtained a particular mp3 of a classical song ripped from vinyl by somebody else (a capella girls’ chorus). Just using very basic filtering of the lowest frequencies improved the sound so much I was very surprised.

The rest is probably distortion inherent in the LP and wear.

Yeah, my LPs are definitely worn. Oh well — at least I don’t own anything rare and coveted — it’s mostly 70s and 80s trash, bought with my high school allowance, and then I went through an “alternative rock” phase in the mid-80s which resulted in me wasting a lot of money on British import stuff from groups like Red Lorry Yellow Lorry. Nothing that can’t be found on the internet these days — in fact, I’ve already found most of the old stuff on Youtube.

PS: I forgot to add, I went to a lot of rock concerts in the 80s, with a friend who liked to be up front by the speakers whenever possible, so any subtleties in sound quality are lost on me.
