For God’s sakes, Obama, you’re only a couple of years older than me — you can’t possibly give a real shit about what happened at Kent State. You were frickin’ nine years old.

I smell flop sweat.

I’ve known several people who lived in Ohio around the time of the Kent State shootings. And none of them were sympathetic to the students there, in large part of the rioting they were involved with.

    Obama is indeed shortsighted.

The Obama campaign event actually was at a branch campus, not the one where the shootings took place.

Although not from Ohio (and open to correction by the Real Jeff S), I also suspect that people in northeast Ohio associate the words “Kent State” with more than the shootings. It’s a quite large school, so most people probably have a family member or friend who went there and wouldn’t consider the mere fact that an event was held on the campus to be offensive. In fact, I would suspect they might be offended if politicians treated the place (let alone its branch campuses) as radioactive. (The Obama event had nothing to do with the shootings; it was on “women and the economy” or some such.) If I recall correctly, an Obama-Clinton debate was held on a different branch campus in the spring.

Hey, he was only 8 years old when his friend and associate William Ayres was bombing the Pentagon and the Capitol. I guess he had a ‘political awakening’ between the two, because he sure as Hell doesn’t care about Ayres’ actions.

Point taken, James, but for the rest of the country, let alone the world, the name “Kent State” now has a sinister cast, like the one “Dallas” or “Selma” has.

While Obama’s visit had absolutely nothing to do with the shooings — it isn’t like he laid a wreath or something (if only!!) — and I feel bad for the folks who live and work there, the fact remains that branch campus or not, the name is associated with Boomer idiocy.

It would be like visiting “Woodstock.” Obama might have legit business there. I’d still advised against it — some things just look and sound bad.

It’s just another case of not thinking something through. In much the same way that, “Jesus was a community organizer; Pilate was a governor” is a splendid way to make us forget about the messianic comparisons. At this point, if I hear anything about the sixties connected to Obama, Ayers comes to mind.
