Oh good lord! Sometimes it’s better not to look things up… actor Nigel Terry, who played the part of nutty General Cobb on the recent Doctor Who episode “The Doctor’s Daughter,” also played the part of Mortimer in Derek Jarman’s hard-gaytastic version of Edward II. Yes, I saw that movie in an art-house movie theater (I think it was the one next to my friend’s psychiatrist’s office on Miami Beach) when it came out. Anyone who has seen the movie will know why I feel all creepy now.

I remember him from one of his earliest roles: nerdy, near-patricide Prince John in “The Lion in Winter”. It’s colored my later impressions of him, including King Arthur in “Excalibur”.

I never did get around to watching Excalibur. I saw bits of Lion in Winter but found it to be too shouty. Then again, this was years ago. But I find Katherine Hepburn a bit hard to take in large doses.

SCTV did a bit once that perfectly captured the shoutiness of The Lion in Winter. Dave Thomas as Peter O’Toole and Katherine O’Hara as Katherine Hepburn. Or maybe it was Martin Short as Katherine Hepburn.
I mostly remember Nigel Terry from Excalibur. He was a nice king, but I didn’t have any trouble understanding why Guinivere hared off with Lancelot.
