Movers ‘N’ Shakers

There’s another Starbucks controversy a-brewin’. Oh, that’s bad, I know. Anyway, it surprises me that drinking Starbucks coffee is still considered an activity that confers status in New York City, of all places. Here in little old Orlando Starbucks is just considered a chain, where the lumpenprole congregate. Well, the average office worker, anyway. To find the pretentious crowd you have to go to one of our several independent coffee houses.

As for me, I drink Starbucks on those occasions when I feel like (and can afford) a fancy drink, like a vanilla latte or something. And also they occasionally have cool mugs. But otherwise I drink coffee at home.

Here in The Great Northwest, Starbucks is not only considered a chain, but a local one. One of many. We have SBC (owned now by Starbucks but keeping a separate identity), Tully’s, Pegasus, Cafe Apassionato, and a plethora of one off stands and shops. Dinky little country roads have drive up stands on them, as do fishing piers and service stations and hardware stores.

Up here it’s just a drink. To the locals anyway. Transplants, especially Californians, get all giddy at being at the Center of the Universe. I had a friend visiting from CA last year, on a trip into Seattle I took her to the original Starbucks. For her, it was a religious pilgrimage, like for Mark Morford being granted the favor of licking the sweat off Obama’s balls.

Hmmm… if Starbucks came out with an Obamamocha they’d knock every other espresso place out of business. In SF or Berkeley, anyway.

It could be half espresso, half milk! Ooh, I’m gonna go to hell…

That’s okay, I think most of the really interesting people end up there anyway.

Oh, and the espresso used? Kenyan, of course. Maybe half Kenyan, half Kona.

By the way, we haven’t had a Twisted Shitster update lately.

No details, please – just tell us it’s over.

For really great coffee you can make at home, you need one of these:

    Chambord

    Glad you’re feeling better, Andrea.
