I finally got a job through one of the placement agencies. I was just waiting to hear when they’d want me to start — I start tomorrow. It’s just a temporary position, but I am hoping it will lead to something more permanent.
Finally, we’re getting some proper rain — by that I mean “the trees on the far side of the courtyard are blurry” rain. I just heard the “sizzling” noise and opened the blinds to watch. Oops, it’s already slackening. No! Come back, rain!
Okay, unless Orange County, Florida has really weird requirements on what sort of a background their temps can have, I should be starting my new (temporary, alas, though I am holding out hopes that this will lead to something permanent) job possibly by Thursday. Maybe even tomorrow, but I haven’t gotten a call yet telling me. I don’t particularly want to work for the county (government jobs, urgh), but a job is a job. It’s some sort of accounting clerk thing, probably just filing and data entry as the pay isn’t that great. On the other hand, it’s more than the unemployment was — and after this week, it will be all I will have.
I also went and looked at some small studio apartments in an older part of Orlando. The building was old but sturdy (it would have to be sturdy to last in Florida, the climate here is hell on anything that isn’t made of concrete), and the studios small but laid out well, with lots of closet space. More than I plan to need, actually — I’m going to be getting rid of a lot of stuff. I just can’t stand it anymore. I wear maybe one third of the clothes I own, and I have those three crates of LPs I never play, and the stereo is old and broken anyway. I also have boxes of books, but I am just going to store most of those. Also I’ll be getting rid of most of my furniture. It’s all second hand stuff anyway except for the bed, which I am going to either sell or store. I can sleep on the futon on the floor.
Oh well, it’s nice to make plans. Considering my lousy credit and my employment situation it’s a crapshoot on whether or not I’ll be even able to get into another apartment. It would be embarrassing if I had to hang on here month by month, not to mention too expensive.
…And a good thing too, because I just filed my last week of unemployment. Which means I’m only going to get one week’s pay instead of two. Ulp. This assignment (it’s through a temp agency) is only for a week and a half (someone is sick), but hopefully I can parlay it into a longer assignment or a full term assignment. I’m off to get my drug test, and the job starts tomorrow. I don’t know when I’ll actually get paid (probably a week or two after the assignment ends, that’s how these things usually go) so I’m looking at a slim month financially. If you want to contribute a few dollars to my food and gas fund feel free…
I sure hope I can get a real job out of this. I’m beginning to feel like a ghost.
Well, I went ahead yesterday and told the management I wouldn’t be renewing my lease. (We have to give 60-day notices here.) This means I have two months to find a new place to live. They offered to transfer me to another apartment in this community for a lower price, but I didn’t want to lock myself in to another 12-month lease. I’m not even sure I’m going to stay in Florida, since I can’t seem to get anyone to hire me here.
Or, well, if you must… but if you see weird stuff on the site, it’s because I’m fooling around with the theme. It’s not your mind! Well, as far as I know it’s not.
…you actually own the dvd of something that happens to be on tv tonight, and you look at the clock and say to yourself: “Darn, I missed the beginning.”
Well, it doesn’t seem that bad. Every once in a while when I do something (like delete a link from the program menu) I’ll get that “allow” box and the desktop will go dim until I click on it, which takes a nanosecond. And this is the Premium issue so it has that fancy “Aero” effect, which is pretty but nothing to get hysterical about. Otherwise it seems to work more or less the same as XP. I had no trouble installing some of my favorite programs, and the box has enough memory installed to handle the load. So there.
