My parents have a house just north of Austin, and I have seen scorpions and tarantulas there (my Dad got stung by a small one once that had gotten in to his shoe in the house). The river next to the house has all four kinds of North American poisonous snakes.
But other than that, what's the problem?

That was one of the things I couldn't stand while living in Houston--the bugs! Big spiders (not tarantulas, thank God), big flying tree roaches (along with the smaller German ones), and fire ants. Now I'm up here in the PNW, where there are still spiders but not as big, as well as slugs. It's much more quieter w/o my screaming "Die! Die!" while trying to kill a roach with a broom.

I'm sure the spider that spun that web couldn't have been more than four or five feet across.
Not counting the legs.

If you think the insects and reptiles are bad in Texas, you should come to Florida. We have roaches that have their own zip code.

To tell you the truth... we have spiders like that here. Once I was driving with a friend along I-75 where it goes through the Ocala National Forest. The trees along the side of the road were covered with these huge webs. And on a different trip I stopped at one of those turnpike rest stops and there was this dead tree completely covered in webs. (This time, though, it was tent caterpillars, not spiders.) Much of Florida looks like it was designed by Tim Burton.
