Thanks for the link, Andrea; I'm glad to see that somebody is finally translating Martial - all of him. (Years ago, at college, I came across a translation of his epigrams done in the 20s I think - most into English but in a few cases the translator had gone coy and put some into *Italian*, perhaps for fear that our Anglophone eyes would be scorched out of our little heads.)

Beats me why Mr. Salemi should think that Christians would be offended by Martial; they should be his biggest fans. Look at the people he's criticizing, after all.

Well, there's this persistent image of Christians as goody-two-shoes who go about squeaking that people mustn't use naughty words. I know plenty of Christians who swear like sailors.
