Washed away

Massive storms and floods in Australia. The accounts of many on this thread are noticeable for one missing element: cries for Australia's government to "do something!" I wonder why that is... Readers, can you help me out? It's so strange, quite beyond my experience.

prairiecat [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Self-sufficiency & self-reliance have become forgotten commodities in urban areas of the US. Last winter there were 3 Cat 4 or Cat 5 storms in the Lower 48. Did you see citizens crying for FEMA or demanding to know where President Bush was when they hit? Nope. Cuz they were snow storms in the prairie states, where people are self-sufficient, have some idea of how to care for themselves, & tend to harbor suspicion of "the gubmint." I think maybe the storms & floods in Australia have shown the same things are true with our Aussie friends.

MareeS has a harrowing tale & I'm glad she's ok.
